Claude, ChatGPT or Microsoft Copilot for company data: what each can connect to, and on which plan
Short answer
All three can reach company systems through connectors built on MCP, an open standard, but they differ on who can add a connector and what an admin can control. As of 17 October 2026, Claude accepts custom connectors on every plan (one on Free), ChatGPT's help centre names Business and Enterprise/Edu for full custom connectors, and Microsoft adds MCP servers to Copilot Studio agents, where admins can block them. Choose by where your people already work, and check the vendor's live page, because plans change often.
What can connect, and who can add it
"Custom connector" here means a connection you point at your own data, or at a system with no ready-made connector. In all three products it uses MCP, the open standard for connecting AI applications to external systems.
| Claude | ChatGPT | Microsoft Copilot | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plans | Free, Pro, Max, Team, Enterprise. | Free, Go, Plus, Pro. Business, Enterprise, Edu. | Copilot on work accounts. Copilot Studio under a separate licence. |
| Add a custom connector | All plans. Free is limited to one. | Business, Enterprise/Edu: full. Pro: read and fetch only. Plus: not stated; the pricing page lists Developer mode (beta). | Add an MCP server to a Copilot Studio agent. |
| Who can add it | You, on Free, Pro, Max. Owners, on Team and Enterprise. | Admins and owners (Business). Admins and members they authorise (Enterprise/Edu). | Agent builders with a Copilot Studio licence. An admin approves servers added through the admin centre. |
| Network | Called from Anthropic's cloud. Must be reachable on the public internet. | Public HTTPS endpoint, or Secure MCP Tunnel for a private server. | Streamable transport only. Admin-centre servers need a public endpoint. |
Controls, data and availability
| Claude | ChatGPT | Microsoft Copilot | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Admin controls | Team: single sign-on, connector controls. Audit logs, role-based access and SCIM: Enterprise. | Business: roles, single sign-on. Enterprise/Edu add role-based access control, per-action control, Compliance API. | Admin centre can block MCP servers. Power Platform data policies apply in Copilot Studio. |
| Asks before it acts | Asks you to approve tool use. "Allow always" and research mode skip the check. | May ask before write actions. Enterprise/Edu admins can switch actions off. | Not described on the pages we read. Check the tool settings in Copilot Studio. |
| Used for training by default | Free, Pro, Max: listed as opt-out. Team, Enterprise, API: not used. | Free, Go, Plus, Pro: opt-out. Business, Enterprise, Edu, API: not used. | Prompts, responses and Microsoft Graph data are not used to train foundation models. |
| Where data is processed | US-only option on usage-based Enterprise. No Saudi region named. | Storage region choice for eligible API and Enterprise/Edu: includes UAE, not Saudi Arabia. | Copilot Studio lists UAE North, not Saudi Arabia. Unlisted tenants are stored in the US. |
| Available in Saudi Arabia | On Anthropic's supported-countries list. | On OpenAI's ChatGPT supported-countries list. | 170+ markets, Arabic supported, Saudi Arabia not named. Confirm with Microsoft. |
Checked against the vendors' pages on 17 October 2026; the sections below give the detail and links. Prices are left out on purpose: they change and differ by billing route, so use each vendor's pricing page. Anthropic's supported-countries page shows an effective date of 12 November 2026, which is after our check, so look at it again.
Claude
Claude is the simplest to start with on plans: custom connectors are available on all five plans, with one allowed on Free. On Team and Enterprise, owners decide who can add them, and each member then signs in to the connector individually, so Claude reaches only what that person can see. A connector set up with a shared credential is the exception: everyone using it gets that credential's access. On Enterprise, a custom role that includes "Manage access to Libraries" can add connectors too. If your server sits behind a firewall, allow the outbound range 160.79.104.0/21 from Anthropic's IP addresses page.
Anthropic is plain about the risk. It has not verified custom connectors, a malicious server can hide instructions in what it returns, and "Allow always" removes the approval step. Its connectors article describes the owner controls on Team and Enterprise. Setup steps are in our guide on connecting company data to AI.
ChatGPT
This is where sources disagree most, and OpenAI's own pages are part of the disagreement. Here is what we found on 17 October 2026:
- OpenAI's help article on custom MCP servers says custom connections and full MCP support are available to Business and Enterprise/Edu customers on ChatGPT web. It says Pro users can connect custom servers with read and fetch permissions, and it does not mention Plus. It also says that in the current Plugins experience you do not need to switch on Developer Mode first.
- OpenAI's pricing page lists "Developer mode (beta)" for Plus and Pro, and not for Free or Go.
- OpenAI's developer page on connecting and testing a plugin gives the setup flow but names no plans.
- Salla's connector page asks for a ChatGPT Plus account and a path through Settings, Apps and Developer mode. OpenAI's help article describes a Plugins flow instead and calls the older Apps setup legacy.
- Third-party guides disagree with each other: some say individual plans are read-only, some say they can write.
Our reading: if you work on your own on Pro, expect read and fetch only. If you are on Plus, test in your own account, because OpenAI's pages do not agree. If you want a connector for the whole company, plan for Business or Enterprise/Edu, where an admin controls who can add one, publishes it, and (on Enterprise/Edu) can switch individual actions on or off. Read OpenAI's help article before you buy a plan for this, since it is updated often.
OpenAI also lets a private server connect through Secure MCP Tunnel: a small program you run inside your network connects out to OpenAI, so the server needs no public address. It needs a developer or IT person to set up.
Microsoft Copilot
Two products share the name here, and they work differently.
Copilot Studio is where you build an agent and give it tools, including MCP servers. MCP needs generative orchestration turned on, and the server must use Streamable transport. To create and manage agents you need a tenant licence plus a per-user licence; people who use a published agent need no special licence, and a trial cannot publish. The Teams plan does not include generative orchestration, so MCP is not available on it. Microsoft's licensing page has the detail.
Microsoft Copilot in Microsoft 365 can be extended with plugins and agents, and admins choose which ones are allowed. The Tools page in the admin centre lets them block or unblock MCP servers, and a bring-your-own MCP server feature, still in preview, has a developer register a server and an admin approve it. Copilot also only shows data each person already has permission to see in Microsoft 365, which Microsoft describes in its privacy page.
If your people use more than one
Many companies end up with all three: Copilot because the company runs on Microsoft 365, and Claude or ChatGPT because some staff prefer them. Each has its own connector setup, its own sign-in, its own admin screen and its own log. Three assistants and five systems can mean fifteen connections to look after.
- Keep one list of which systems are connected to which assistant, and who approved each.
- Switch off connectors nobody uses.
- Use the same rules everywhere: read-only first, each person's own access, approval before any change.
What none of them gives you by default
Each vendor's admin controls cover its own assistant and its own connectors. None of them gives you one set of roles, approvals and logs across all your systems, or one shared meaning for "net sales" or "branch". An assistant connected to your online store, your POS and your accounting through three separate connectors still sees three separate rule sets. Our guide on one report for all branches and channels shows what that means for sales questions.
Keep it safe: data, training and Saudi data protection
- Check the training default for your plan. The table shows the default for each vendor. On individual plans you may need to switch training off yourself.
- Do not assume data stays in Saudi Arabia. In the pages we read, none of the three names a processing region in the Kingdom. Anthropic offers a US-only inference option on usage-based Enterprise plans. OpenAI lists ten storage regions for eligible customers, including the UAE but not Saudi Arabia. Microsoft's Copilot Studio table lists UAE North, not Saudi Arabia, and says unlisted tenants are stored in the United States. Ask the vendor in writing where your data is processed.
- Personal data needs care. If the data includes customers or staff, Saudi personal-data rules may apply, including rules on sending data outside the Kingdom. Check with your legal adviser. SDAIA publishes the rules on its National Data Governance Platform.

Questions people ask
Which one is best for company data?
We do not rank the assistants on answer quality. This page compares how they connect and what you can control. Start from where your people already work: Copilot if the company runs on Microsoft 365, otherwise whichever your team already uses and your admin can govern.
Can the free plans connect to our data?
Claude's Free plan allows one custom connector. OpenAI's pages do not list Free or Go for custom MCP servers, and its pricing page shows Developer mode as not included on those plans.
Do we need all three?
No. Most companies are better off with one assistant that their admin can manage, and a clear list of what it is connected to.
Why do guides disagree about ChatGPT's plans?
OpenAI has renamed these features more than once. Its help article sits under Connected apps but describes a menu now called Plugins, and it keeps the older Apps setup as a legacy option. Some vendors still use the old names, and OpenAI's pricing page and help article describe the individual plans differently. Treat any plan table, including ours, as a snapshot.
Where Vootlabs fits
Vootlabs is designed to work with Claude, ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot, and with a company's own agents, rather than replace any of them. It connects the systems a business runs on, such as the online store, POS, ERP, accounting and spreadsheets, so your team can ask questions across all of them from the assistant they prefer, with access by role, approval before any change, and a full audit trail.
We are onboarding a limited number of companies in a design-partner programme. If your team uses more than one assistant and several systems, we would like to hear what you need.
